Bicycle Exercise (PLEASE ANSWER)?
I want to get some bicycle training before spring comes. I am going to start cycling to work in 4 months. But I have not rode in a while, so I need to get some exercise, I have a bike, but there is over a foot of snow on the ground. I looked at exercise bikes, and bicycle trainers, but they are ridiculously expensive, they must only be for millionaires. Does anyone have any good ideas for me to get some good bicycle like exercise. Joining a gym is not an option.
A trainer is a good option. I beg to differ with you on the cost. You can get a CycleOps Mag trainer new for around $100 and used on Craigslist for less than half of that. I love mine and am no where near a millionaire.
Other than that, use what you were born with — your legs to walk or run. Walk 4 or 5 miles, jog or run a mile a day.
Crunches and pushups work your core and is beneficial to riding.
It takes determination and effort. Thats all.
Try shovelling a path for you to ride the bike. ^_^
Walking or jogging would help. Depends how far you have to ride to work, it’s not such a big deal if it’s only 20-30min ride. You’ll get fit enough after a week or so.

I would buy an exercise bicycle because you do not have to be at the mercy of the weather. I am not a fan of cycling because there is an element of criminals who are looking for victims. My advise is to pay up for a heavy exercycle, such as Schwinn Airdyne $500 to 600. Do not buy the junk you see in department stores. Use music to make your workout more rewarding. I would not be put off by the price tag of the exercise equipment. The dividend of better health and happiness is well worth the price. And home equipment is such a time efficient approach to your program. Good luck.

Well other than a trainer or gym, your only other option is to ride, but I understand that would be a little hard in the snow. I guess I can’t complain with our 50 degree weather in Southern California. I know you stated a gym is not an option, but you did not say why. If you reconsider joining gym, a spin/cycle class is an excellent way to get yourself back in shape. I am not taking about those life cycles either. Attending cycle classes is the only reason I go to the gym, get an hour of intense cycling workout and you are done. This will quickly build up your cardio and leg strength. The only other exercise you may want to throw in is working out your core – sit ups, planks, etc. I am not sure where Thomas P lives that he is concerned about criminal elements, ride in a bad neighborhood and I guess that could be true. The only issues I sometimes deal with are dogs and inattentive drivers. The problem with trainers is that it could get boring which is why I opt for spin classes when the weather is bad outside. Good Luck and welcome to the community of cyclists.
