  • How do working line dog trainers become trainers?

Posted by admin on March 9th, 2010 and filed under trainers | 9 Comments »

I’ve been wanting to train dogs for as long as I can remember and now that i am 18 I figure that I can possibly start now. I want to train dogs for serious protection work. I don’t want to do Schutzhund or French Ring as those are nothing but games. Working trainers: how did you get started? How can I get started?

    Chief Smackahoe, huh? Interesting.

First, realizing that you know "less than nothing" is important. I started with "old school" trainers that trained "old school" protection. Basically, you created the most dangerous animal you could through hard agitation. The only people that could handle the dog or be near it were the owners. Several years later I was introduced to dog sports. I could make almost any dog aggressive without ever touching him…a natural gift I have with dogs and tree huggers. Understanding what motivates the dog to do certain things, is essential to create real protection dogs. Comprehending and be able to judge hardness, nerves, stability are not gonna pop into your head via book, DVD or any of the worthless "K9 colleges"…..neither is understanding what must be done with what type of dog to get a real protection dog. Even though judges are leaning more toward awarding points to the most "correctly performed" exercises…there ARE still Schutzhund clubs that still train with the original focus. Finding "Old School" trainers is getting more & more difficult every year….but it is information that is necessary. Military will teach you to "Handle"….not to "Train". Police follow blindly behind "Handlers".

What you need is "hands on" training with real trainers and real dogs. More than anything, Natural Ability is a must….it CANNOT be learned. Excellent handlers can be created….excellent trainers cannot. 95% of what is considered protection training, is nothing more than making aggressive dogs. A good protection dog is NOT aggressive. Knowing that you know less than nothing gives you a head start on those that think they DO know something….as THEY will never be good trainers. If this is a "business" plan, your reputation will dictate your future. Contacts in Europe do not come to those with attitude and a check book. Without contacts….not acquaintances…Real contacts….you will not have access to great dogs. When all you get is mediocre dogs to start with, then mediocre will be all you’ll ever produce. As for seminars……until you can fathom what’s being said, it’s a waste of time. Get yourself a stainless steel pooper scooper, a pair of rubber boots, a whole lot of coffee…and go find a kennel job so you can pay your club dues at the local working club.

Whale Kills Trainer at Sea World

Posted by admin on March 9th, 2010 and filed under trainers | 25 Comments »

A Sea World killer whale snatched a trainer from a poolside platform today and thrashed the trainer around underwater, killing her in front of a horrified audience. It marked the third time the animal had been involved in a human death.

Distraught audience members were hustled out of the stadium immediately, and part of the park was closed.

Trainer Dawn Brancheau, 40, was rubbing Tilikum after a noontime show when the 12,000-pound whale grabbed her and pulled her in, said Chuck Tompkins, head of animal training at all SeaWorld parks. Park officials say the veteran trainer drowned.

Audience member Eldon Skaggs said Brancheau’s interaction with the whale appeared leisurely and informal at first. But then the whale “pulled her under and started swimming around with her,” he told The Associated Press.

Skaggs, 72, said an alarm sounded and staff rushed the audience out of the stadium as workers scrambled around with nets.

Skaggs said he heard that during an earlier show the whale was not responding to directions. Others who attended the earlier show said the whale was behaving like an ornery child.

Another audience member, Victoria Biniak, told WKMG-TV the whale “took off really fast in the tank, and then he came back, shot up in the air, grabbed the trainer by the waist and started thrashing around, and one of her shoes flew off.”

Two other witnesses told the Orlando Sentinel that the whale grabbed the woman by the upper arm and tossed her around in its mouth while swimming rapidly around the tank. Brazilian tourist Joao Lucio DeCosta Sobrinho was at an underwater viewing area when he suddenly saw a whale with a person in its mouth.

Because of his size and the previous deaths, trainers were not supposed to get into the water with Tilikum, and only about a dozen of the park’s 29 trainers worked with him. Brancheau had more experience with the 30-year-old whale than most, and was one of the park’s most experienced trainer.

“We recognized he was different,” Tompkins said. He said no decision has been made yet about what will happen to Tilikum, such as transferring him to another facility.

A SeaWorld spokesman said Tilikum was one of three orcas blamed for killing a trainer in 1991 after the woman lost her balance and fell in the pool at Sealand of the Pacific near Victoria, British Columbia.

Tilikum was also involved in a 1999 death, when the body of a man who had sneaked by SeaWorld security was found draped over him. The man either jumped, fell or was pulled into the frigid water and died of hypothermia, though he was also bruised and scratched by Tilikum.

SeaWorld suspended the killer whale shows at all of its parks, which also include locations in San Diego and San Antonio, to review procedures.

What are the most suitable trainers colour?

Posted by admin on February 19th, 2010 and filed under trainers | 3 Comments »

We all know that our outfit can add value to us in the way it can make us look cool or hot.

I am wondering what colours of trainers (sneakers) suite all colours of other garments, like jeans, trousers, T-shirts … etc for sports or casual fashion.

If you’re looking for something versatile and sporty that will match lots of different outfits, you can’t go wrong with brown trainers like these http://www.shoes.com/brown/mens-athletic/training.shtml. I think black or white are too stark and stand out. If you’re looking for versatile, then they need to blend in.

The other option is to get some that stand out a lot and really own the look. Make it your signature. Maybe something like this? http://www.shoes.com/multi/mens-athletic.shtml

    Happy shoe shopping!
