No. Being a personal trainer doesn't mean much. You could go take a weekend course and say you're a personal trainer, and tell people to hop on a swiss ball while juggling dumbells, and they would believe you.

If your goal is fat loss, eat less, move more.

If your goal is strength / muscle growth, do starting strength.
References :
If you can't learn on your own in a parking lot or in a field of grass then I recommend offering someone $10 on craigslist.

Don't go too fast at first. Focus more on moving around obstacles and braking.
References :
http://bicyclemechanic.blogspot.com

if you have just a little speed it will almost keep it self up. start on a gentle hill. know how the breaks feel. and relax a little. keep your feet just off the ground with your knees gently bent ready to support you if you get too wobbly.
weight center, relax, coast, bring your feet on to the pedal's and sit. when comfortable try pedeling, still slow, wait for the feel to come to you, and you're away. just keep enjoying the feeling.

No lessons

Buy a bike

Buy a good quality helmet

Go out into a park with soft grass and ride the sucker :-)

After falling off 10 or 20 times you will learn ! you may learn faster if you are lucky. It is not that hard to do, just balance and speed, the wheels act as a gyroscope so once you are moving it is much easier to stay upright.

Begin by coasting down a hill, buy a nice solid mountain bike that can take some knocks. Leave the speed races for later.
References :
Fan and magnetic are the most cost effective but are louder and have less natural road feel. Both are extremely reliable. Any decent unit at a bike shop would do.

Fluid: quiet (important in an apartment), great road like feel, excellent workout. But they come in varying quality. Due to the design I prefer the Kurt Kinetic. It eliminates the leaking issue of cheaper units.

Centrifugal: very reliable, about the same cost as some Kurt Kinetic, great road feel although different than fluid, made in USA and sold direct. See 2nd link

Rollers: Set up once, drop bike on, ride - requires balance, constant attention, and good pedaling technique! I would try one of these out at a bike shop before actually buying. It's a love - hate thing. Kreitler is expensive but by far the class of the field. 3rd link

All except rollers require a block under the front wheel of the bike to make it level. Old phone books work ok, but the plastic blocks work better. A sweat guard to keep sweat off your bike is a good idea as well since sweat is salty and can corrode steel and to a lesser extent aluminum.
References :
http://www.kurtkinetic.com/

I think the fluid models gives your the most "realistic" road feel but it runs a little more expensive and there were some concerns about leaking. Both the fluid and magnetic are quiet.

One thing you also want to consider is your objective with the trainer. If you plan on get some workout during when the off season, any type is fine. Fluid model helps to get more training and stay in shape type exercise.
