Ken’s Diablo Maiden Flight

Here’s the maiden flight of my Diablo electric ducted fan jet trainer, which ended in a crash! (I’m still somewhat new at this).

I have to say that this plane seemed a bit under-powered out-of-the-box, though definitely has forgiving characteristics. I like its lines, the way it handles, and can say that the crash didn’t really hurt it much. It’s a pretty tough bird and was up and flying again the next day, with a little 5-minute epoxy.

The plane’s engine pod mounted on top allows it to land smoothly on the field, without getting dirt and debris in the fan, which can easily damage the blades. In the event of a crash (like we see here) the pod will break away, limiting the overall kinetic force of the impact. The pod itself has a very tough outer plastic shell and can take a real beating.

Like most RTF planes, the radio is cheap, so I later replaced the transmitter and receiver with a Spektrum DX-7/ AR6200, and upgraded the motor to a 4200kv Brushless motor from Hobby King, along with a 25A Electronic Speed Controller. Lots of Fun figuring this stuff out!
