Is it better to get a personal trainer if you go to the gym?

I got a one-month membership at the gym so whenever I go there I usually just work-out on the treadmill, bicycle-machines, etc, etc. Should I pay extra for a personal trainer? Would it be a good idea? Mostly I just use to the work-out machines, what do you think?

I would like to get beginning bicycle lessons from a trainer or take a cycling class. I would like to find them particularly in the Whittier, CA area. If not, at least around the Los Angeles area.

If you can’t learn on your own in a parking lot or in a field of grass then I recommend offering someone $10 on craigslist.

Don’t go too fast at first. Focus more on moving around obstacles and braking.

Indoor bike trainer recommendation?

I need a good indoor bike trainer that I can use with my tri-bike. Looking for good resistance level, easy to use, reliable… any ideas?

Fan and magnetic are the most cost effective but are louder and have less natural road feel. Both are extremely reliable. Any decent unit at a bike shop would do.

Fluid: quiet (important in an apartment), great road like feel, excellent workout. But they come in varying quality. Due to the design I prefer the Kurt Kinetic. It eliminates the leaking issue of cheaper units.

Centrifugal: very reliable, about the same cost as some Kurt Kinetic, great road feel although different than fluid, made in USA and sold direct. See 2nd link

Rollers: Set up once, drop bike on, ride – requires balance, constant attention, and good pedaling technique! I would try one of these out at a bike shop before actually buying. It’s a love – hate thing. Kreitler is expensive but by far the class of the field. 3rd link

All except rollers require a block under the front wheel of the bike to make it level. Old phone books work ok, but the plastic blocks work better. A sweat guard to keep sweat off your bike is a good idea as well since sweat is salty and can corrode steel and to a lesser extent aluminum.

Will i lose weight using a cross trainer and a bike?

I’ve recently started using a cross trainer and a bike. i just wanted to know, if i use this 30 minutes everyday and eat more healthier will i be able to lose weight or not? and will i see the results within a month?

I am looking for a bike trainer that is not too expensive and, more importantly, quiet. I live in an apartment and am concerned about my downstairs neighbors.

To be quiet and low cost get a magnetic trainer and to make sure it is quiet put on a slick rear tire as they make less noise, then put the bike/ trainer on a rubber mat to dampen any vibrations that could be transmitted through the floor.

EDIT: DO NOT USE PENGUIN FIRE. THERE IS A BETTER TRAINER CALLED PENGUIN STORM. USE THAT INSTEAD.

This is a video of the new trainer, Penguin fire, made by Microchip123. It’s great, but not as good as his ‘Ultimate Club Penguin Trainer’ that worked before the new features. Though it’s a beta, this is a great trainer to use.

Please do not spam later saying ‘Ultimate Club Penguin Trainer is better’ or anything like that. This video was made August 17, 2008, and Penguin Fire was not made long before this video. As of now, this is one of the only working trainers.
