  • Can I become an Athletic Trainer then a Physical Therapist?

Posted by admin on March 21st, 2010 and filed under physical trainer | 2 Comments »

My plan is to major in Athletic Training and after the four years, if I get my degree I would like to continue my education in physical therapy. The courses that are required for Athletic training are very similar to those that are required for physical therapy and I just wanted to know if I were to go ahead with this plan would I have to retake the similar courses that I already took for Athletic Training again for Physical Therapy?

Yes, this is fairly common. You might get SOME credit for some of your ATC courses in a PT program…but PTs generally take a much more indepth type of course, so you may need to take some courses you got an introduction to as an ATC.

Just make sure you take any courses required outside your major in order to meet the PT prerequisites.

Yes, I am pretty sure that it is possible. There are certain degrees that qualify you to become an athletic trainer, and you can build off of them to become a physical therapist. I would speak to an adviser at your school so that they can clarify the best path for you to take.
